About This Book

In Nazi-occupied Paris, a Muslim community did something extraordinary: they opened the Grand Mosque as a sanctuary for Jewish families and others hunted by the Gestapo. Under the leadership of Rector Si Kaddour Benghabrit, clerics and members of the mosque community hid at least one hundred Jews, Allied airmen, and resistance fighters, helping them escape through hidden rooms and tunnels beneath the building. This beautifully illustrated picture book, told through oil paintings, presents this remarkable true story of compassion and bravery across faiths. It was named an American Library Association Notable Children’s Book in 2010.
